Subliminal Penumbra
Beneath the surface of perceptual clarity lies the shadow realm—an underworld not of chaos, but of intricate design. In this space, forms interlock with quiet precision, their relationships defined not by illumination but by absence. Subtle patterns emerge in subdued tonalities, suspended in shifting greys and veiled within the faint atmosphere of the penumbra.

Subliminal Penumbra is a body of experimental work created entirely from shadows. It focuses on the penumbra—faint, ephemeral shadow tracings that exist alongside the visible world yet often go unnoticed. Using sculptural forms as a starting point, I photograph the shadows they cast and examine them closely through digital editing. These delicate traces become the primary subject of the work, transforming into new visual structures and compositions.
I am particularly interested in aspects of photography that are often overlooked or dismissed. My process is largely intuitive, guided by careful observation and experimentation. By working with tone, contrast, and subtle structural shifts, I seek to reveal hidden patterns and relationships within the shadow itself.
Colour also plays an important role in this series. By introducing colour, I bring the penumbra out of obscurity and give it a stronger visual presence. Rather than appearing simply as the absence of light, the shadow becomes active, expressive, and visually autonomous.
In this way, the photograph becomes more than a record of the visible world. It becomes a means of revealing the quiet architecture of the penumbra—a subtle shadow realm where perception shifts and reality and illusion coexist.
At the threshold where shadow dissolves into perception.
