Phantom Shadows
Not all shadows belong entirely to the objects that cast them. Under certain conditions, light itself begins to behave unpredictably, producing fleeting forms that hover between presence and illusion.

Phantom Shadows presents a staged composition of geometric wooden forms arranged both above and beneath a table. The work explores the relationship between physical structure and the elusive presence of light and shadow.
The lower portion of the scene is anchored by solid objects defined by flat planes and right angles, establishing a sense of structural order. Above, the tabletop and sculptural elements introduce rounded edges and softer contours, creating a visual dialogue between two distinct spatial zones. Together, they form a balanced composition in which stability and ambiguity coexist.
Each photograph contains three simultaneous focal areas: the activity on the table, the arrangement beneath it, and a suspended element in the background. These layers interact in careful counterbalance. The wooden forms ground the image in physical certainty, while a luminous presence introduces a subtle sense of tension and uncertainty.
The lighting draws on the principles of chiaroscuro, using strong contrasts between illumination and shadow to heighten depth and atmosphere. During the process, an unexpected visual aberration appeared when a damaged aluminum light snoot altered the beam of light. The resulting effect introduced a ghost-like form suspended within the scene. Recognizing its potential, I intentionally developed variations of this phenomenon, allowing the phantom presence to inhabit each photograph.
Within these images, solidity and illusion quietly converge. The objects appear stable, yet the light that reveals them also transforms them. The photograph, like the shadow itself, becomes both evidence and apparition—revealing what we see while suggesting what lies just beyond perception.
Ghostlike shadows lingering between presence and absence.
